Textílmiðstöð Íslands 2018

During the month of September 2018, I lived in a northern community of 800 residents: Blönduós, Iceland as an artist in residence at the Icelandic textile centre. During this period of focused activity, I acquired a deeper understanding of traditional, Scandinavian plant-dye technology via hands-on experimentation and the expertise of Guðrún Bjarnadóttir.

The isolated location encouraged a deeper appreciation and macro study of lichens, mosses, and seaside flora.  Using hand-dyed wool threads and yarns, I worked to re-create macro viewpoints of said flora via embroidered, felted works.  Living on the Canadian Shield in NWO I have the opportunity to study local mosses, lichens, and mushrooms in continuation of this project.

I attended this residency with the support of the Ontario Arts Council.
